Photoshoot Blog

Welcome to our blog page, here you can find personal write ups and reviews from the perspective of Amber herself, shoot experiences and stories.

Has blogging become uncool, do people read articles anymore, or is that so 2010? With TikTok and Instagram stealing our attention span and everything being so accessible have we lost our want or need for lengthy written content? I myself, enjoy reading and have done for a very long time, a gripping story or article can have me at the edge of my seat wanting more, and I personally find I can switch the world off, and begin to imagine imagery and scenes in my head, which as a model, is perfect when everything in life can seem very visually and aesthetically focused.

Here on this section of our website, I’d like to offer a safe and personal space, where I discuss what it’s like being a model, the inside scoop on what I think about certain shoots I’ve done, creativity and being a freelance and how I have built my career over the last 9 years.

As a model, sometimes it can feel like you don't necessarily have a voice or opinion when it comes to the way you are portrayed and photographed however this isn't always the case as I do take the role of creative director on many of my projects and design photoshoots from start to finish, I would love to guide you through how I do this on my blog posts throughout the next year or so, guiding you through insider knowledge and a general see into my very busy brain, perhaps I have too many ideas that sometimes a write up might prove useful to you and I.

I am thrilled to have you along with me on this journey, as I have noticed, I haven’t seen many models do this type of blog along with there website, and I would love to be the one to change that, giving my modelling a voice to the image that is me, Amber Farndon…

Get to know me

Who am I? I’m sure you’ve also had some sort of existential crisis before, how much does your job define you, your social circle, your hobbies, your goals? How much of it is you, are you performing? Navigating being a model and what that means often does cross my mind, after all before any success with my career I was just a girl from Somerset who loved cats a bit too much, long walks and making art in her bedroom and writing songs, I was just like any other teenage girl with a dream, when I was 15 and first began modelling things felt very out of reach from me, living and growing up in the countryside, with no access to even a train station nor anywhere even remotely busy, it was hard to even realise I could make my dream a reality.

9 years on, my career has taken me to beautiful places all over the world, I have not only met very talented and creative people but some have become so very close to my heart, and have shaped me as a personal and a model, I have gained best friends, knowledge on art and maybe even now, I’m ever changing, thankgoodness. This is why I wanted to create a blog page, I want to feel connected, I want this to feel open, I want to share with you all about my journey.

Memorable shoots and how it started

Here you can read about some of my first time shooting, memorable and life changing moments from my career and my top moments so far, this page will be ever adapting and changing - I’m sure, as exciting moments are happening all the time, I have some stories, and trust me I can talk for quite sometime, I hope you find some of these stories interesting, grab a cup of tea if you fancy and have a look over some truly funny and time I really adore.

My first ever shoot

My first ever shoot actually happened in the most unlikely of ways, I had always admired models and modelling but really thought it was something that could never really happen to me, until one night, when I was just 15, I was at a friend of a friends birthday celebration, typical teenagers all huddled in a room, having a few drinks, these friends were a few years older than I was, I hadn’t known them long, but we all had a lovely time together. In comes in a very chatty, bubbly lady, (We’ll keep her anonymous) but she was so kind and lovely to me, and said I was really gorgeous and would I try on a yellow bridesmaids dress… Little did I know she ran a wedding magazine and wedding fayre business, she was very complimentary of me and then had me walk in to the room full of friends, then asked me if I’d like to pose for her magazine`and that she was organising a shoot taking place in a weeks time. With no experience but a massive love for modelling, it almost felt like I was in the right place at the right time? - Somethings really do feel like they’re meant to be. The next week flew by, I think I remember at that time being slightly nervous as it’s just something I had never officially done. The shoot was held in Cornwall, on the day I was met with a professional team of stylists, MUA’s and hairstyling. I believe it was in May, so the weather was stunning and the location even more perfect. I wasn’t at that time used to having other people do my makeup so for me it was a massive shock when someone was right up in my face, with fake eyelashes, brushes and everything else you can possibly imagine, even now reminiscing on this, I remember the MUA telling me I was a little shaky, and that she wasn’t going to “poke my eye out”

For what was about to happen next, I was just clueless, I had been shown a world of fashion and styling for the first time, I had only ever seen the finish products of images, it made me think about how much really goes into getting that perfect shot, not to mention the organisation and preparation it takes to get a group of creatives together, so well organised.

Before I knew it, 15 year old me, stood in a Wedding dress, of course with the amount of makeup I had on, the fact I’m 5’9, I looked a lot older than I really was. We shot in a beautiful garden location, kind of frolicking around at that point, pretending and kind of hoping I was getting away with knowing what I was doing without any experience previous to this. I tried angles, expression, posing ideas I had read would look good for the shoot, after the wedding section of the shoot.. YOU WON’T BELIEVE THIS. - I was then asked to pop on a mermaid tail, I really cannot make this up. On location, there was some beautiful but might I add, very dark caves. This is the part where if you’re a photographer, you'e probably thinking, OH gosh, what iOs am I on, what’s my flash doing, where is my focus point? Anyway, I was then helped to wiggle down to sit by this start of a (real cave with water) and asked to pose as a mermaid, I did the best I could, looking back some of the posing was just terrible, but it was my first time shooting in all fairness, and the shots kind of bring a sweet fond memory upon looking back.

In the end after this shoot we also did some fashion based modelling, and after the shoot many photographers congratulated me, and couldn’t believe this was my first ever time modelling, some told me of modelling websites where I could do this more often, and I couldn't believe how lovely and encouraging everyone was, my 15 year old self was in awe of this world, this new dimension I’d be thrown into, happily of course. I later discovered my wedding image was used as a front cover, very Avant Garde styling, but I was on top of the world, it wasn't a huge magazine and it’s not what launched my career as such, but it made a mark and impact on me and without that I don’t know if I would be in this industry for so long as I have been, I’m very grateful for that day.

I love how my career has taken me to so many different locations, from caves in Cornwall, to the busy streets of London shooting fashion and editorial, to isolated and rustic streets in the beautiful cities of Faro and Lisbon in Portugal, it’s really hard to say what my favourite shoot has been, because they’re all great for different reasons, the people are what make modelling and photography and any creative journey the best part of the whole experience, getting to know people through creating is truly rewarding, especially when you’re the face of a company, see products selling through websites, and see prints of magazines and finally see your work coming together.

After my first shoot, I did many creative shoots to understand and pick up all the knowledge I needed from all different types of people in the business, which leads to where I am today, going on to more publications, modelling for fashion, jewellery, wedding, and even getting into catwalks, which is so much different than shooting but so thrilling!

Working with Alpaca Sol

As a model, I like to make the choice to work with as ethical and sustainable brands as possible, supporting smaller businesses is a key to me, modelling anything from jumpers to jewellery, meeting the designers and creators and really bringing there products to life in the final images is so rewarding, and something I love being a part of, not to forget the talented photographers, MUA’s and hair stylists I often get the chance to work with. Having a team together can sometimes take the pressure off of me and elevate the quality of production. However, I am skilled in my own makeup, hair and styling and that has come from experience over the last years with this wonderful job, meeting and getting tips and tricks from top artists from all over the world. i’ll make a section in my personal biog on makeup, how I love to style and much more on beauty and wellness.

A company I loved working with over the years is Alpaca Sol, Ethically sourced fashion made from Alpaca wool. “Alpaca Sol was born out of our passion for travel and beautiful sustainable fabrics.” From a range of Alpaca blend jumpers to Ponchos and scarves and beanies and so much more, I loved working for this brand, Amy and Emma are such wonderful fashion designers and creatives, and I love that they have sourced the wool in a sustainable way. “It was during extensive travel in South America that we fell in love with alpaca. The remarkable softness and durability impressed us, but more than that, the craftmanship of the people working with the wool was beyond anything we had seen before. We became resolute in our intention to work with local people using the techniques that have been passed down from generation to generation. In La Paz we were lucky enough to encounter a network of local artisans whose enthusiasm for their art was inspiring and contagious. And Alpaca Sol was born!”

Working with Eleanor Christine Jewellery

A jewellery company I have had the absolute pleasure of working with is Eleanor Christine Jewellery, a rather spontaneous but beautiful shoot, I met with Eleanor in her studio/home and she showed me the fine workings of her jewellery, I honestly wanted to take everything home with me! Beautifully crafted, handmade, the designs and stones the highest quality, I honestly felt like a goddess on this shoot.

“I specialise in sculptural and statement pieces using a variety of processes – constructed, wax carved and cast, and hand pierced.

I love the tactile nature of silver and gold. Every piece I create has something completely individual to teach me about the material I use.

Colour is important to me, so I am drawn to beautiful stones, like a magpie. Each and every item I craft is entirely bespoke and utterly unique.” says Eleanor - You can find more work from her at https://www.eleanorchristinejewellery.co.uk

Working with Quiz Clothing

Throughout my career I have also had the honour of working for some well known high street brands, QUIZ clothing offer fun and striking clothing, mainly well known for there show stopping long gowns and stand out fashion statement pieces. “Quiz is a dynamic fashion retail group that focuses on delivering catwalk style looks and all the latest trends at value for money prices. Our target audience is the fashion conscious women’s wear market. We aim to be exciting and innovative, offering our customers the fashions, footwear and accessories that they want, when they want. To stay in touch with the ever changing trends within our market we have developed a dynamic and very responsive organisation.”

I was so thrilled to work with such a well known and loved brand, I remember shopping there for years and then I was modelling for them, an absolute dream come true! I was grateful I had creative direction on this shoot, styling faux leather dungarees, paring with a sparkly jumper, and black and white boots. Quiz was a very enjoyable brand to work with, and definitely a highlight moment!

Working with Tania Covo Jewellery

Another shoot I find myself really grateful for and reminiscent of was modelling Tania Covo Jewellery, based in Frome, her stunning handmade collection I modelled in 2017, was out of this world gorgeous, I remember the sea coloured blues and the captivating greens in the sea glass, the quality of the silver, and the attention to detail that had gone into the pieces was so accurately and finely finished! A review writes “She loves the history attached to the objects she finds and loves giving them new life as pieces of jewellery. Colour and pattern inspire Tania and she plays around with her finds until a combination happens that needs to be captured.” Tania’s new collection and website is currently being updated but you can find more of her work https://www.taniacovo.com

I remember our shoot was on a beautiful day in August, the Summer was just drawing to a close, the beach not as busy as it may have been the previous month, we took a very large suitcase on the beach, full of floaty dresses, the colour palette was whites, light blues and greens and purples, fabrics varying from silks to cottons, I had creative styling and Tania decided what jewellery she wanted to pair with the outfit choices, both discussing what would make the jewellery really stand out! I am so pleased with this editorial shoot, I think it’s super striking and really shows off her beautifully made jewellery. We shot from late morning until the sun went right down, the team worked so hard that day, the photographer going above and beyond and Tania helping out wherever she could.

BEHIND THE SCENES

I would also love to make a section on this blog that is even more personal, about my day to day life, how I prepare for photoshoots, health and fitness and keeping well and places I visit and my thoughts on those experiences, from gyms, events and even dining and my favourite cocktail bars. A place where fashion, culture and beauty collide, my next ventures in my creative life and places I think you NEED to check out. I also will have a section on interior design, what makes my life colourful and creative by showing you my favourite things that are keeping me happy, from Pinterest boards to blog posts on my ideal cosy night in, giving you inspiration and insight to my world! My write ups are my opinions and not fact when it comes to this personal side of my blog, so please bare that in mind!

This website is being updated throughout the coming days and weeks ahead, and we are aiming to keep this an active site, with ever changing blog posts, information, behind the scenes and hopefully in the future merch and exciting things we cannot wait to share with you.
